Blood Like Magic by Liselle Sambury

3/5 Stars

After years of waiting for her Calling—a trial every witch must pass in order to come into their powers—the one thing Voya Thomas didn’t expect was to fail. When Voya’s ancestor gives her an unprecedented second chance to complete her Calling, she agrees—and then is horrified when her task is to kill her first love. And this time, failure means every Thomas witch will be stripped of their magic.

I really enjoyed the magic system in this and the familial love that was prevalent throughout the entire book. I also very much enjoyed the plot twist towards the end where we find out that 'destroy her first love' doesn't have to mean that she kills the first person she falls in love with. However I hated the choice she made, and didn't understand at all why she chose to ruin her cousins life over the boy she fell in love with over the course of the book, I don't think it was explained very well. Also the first quarter of this book was so slow that I was debating DNF'ing and I would have if I hadn't read the reviews that says it picks up soon.

  1. Great review! This has been on my tbr for such a long time now so I'm glad that you enjoyed it overall - I especially like the sound of the twist. I'm not usually a fan of books with a slow start but knowing it does pick up would definitely help! Thank you so much for sharing your honest thoughts x
