Flames by Robbie Arnott

A young man named Levi McAllister decides to build a coffin for his 23-year-old sister, Charlotte--who promptly runs for her life. A water rat swims upriver in quest of the cloud god. A fisherman named Karl hunts for tuna in partnership with a seal. And a father takes form from fire. A tale of grief and love and the bonds of family, tracing a journey across the island of Tasmania. Flames is utterly fresh and original, with spellbinding descriptions of nature.


This is going to be a pretty short review again as even though I read it only a couple days ago I'm not entirely sure what it was about or how to feel about it. I did enjoy the whimsical feel but I couldn't find myself caring about any of the characters or caring about what they were up to or if they were going to be ok. It was a short book so that's not overly surprising but I did want a bit more from the characters.

The Ten Thousand Doors of January by Alix E.Harrow

 4/5 Stars In a sprawling mansion filled with peculiar treasures, January Scaller is a curiosity herself. As the ward of the wealthy Mr. Locke, she feels little different from the artefacts that decorate the halls: carefully maintained, largely ignored, and utterly out of place. Then she finds a strange book. A book that carries the scent of other worlds, and tells a tale of secret doors, of love, adventure and danger. Each page turn reveals impossible truths about the world and January discovers a story increasingly entwined with her own. I have to be honest here, I read this one a few weeks ago now and if you asked me what the plot was I would have no idea. I've read over the synopsis and I still haven't got a clue. However, what I do remember is that the writing was phenomenal and the characters were amazing and well written and it felt like I was with them the entire time I was reading it (even if I don't know what they were doing).

 I received an E Arc from net galley in exchange for an honest review 5/5 Stars *SPOILERS* Emma Starrs family bookshop is close to closing and desperate to save it Emma agrees to plan a mystery-themed party for her arch-nemesis Tabitha from school.
