The Mysterious Romance of Murder: Crime, Detection, and the Spirit of Noir by David Lehman

 3/5 Stars

In The Mysterious Romance of Murder, the poet and critic David Lehman explores a wide variety of outstanding books and movies--some famous (The Maltese Falcon, Double Indemnity), some known mainly to aficionados--with style, wit, and passion.

This book was incredibly well researched by someone who clearly has a lot of love for the genre, however, It was mostly just a list of romances in Murder mysteries, which I wasn't expecting it to be and I know that if I had known that going in I would have liked it more as it would feel less like a lesson which I don't enjoy in books.

My June TBR

Another TBR! 1) Love and Other Disasters by Anita Kelly Recently divorced and on the verge of bankruptcy, Dahlia Woodson is ready to reinvent herself on the popular reality competition show Chef’s Special. Too bad the first memorable move she makes is falling flat on her face, sending fish tacos flying—not quite the fresh start she was hoping for. Still, she's focused on winning, until she meets someone she might want a future with more than she needs the prize money. 2) Sorrowland by Rivers Solomon Vern--seven months pregnant and desperate to escape the strict religious compound where she was raised--flees for the shelter of the woods. There, she gives birth to twins and plans to raise them far from the outside world's influence.  But even in the forest, Vern is a hunted woman. She is forced to fight back against the community that refuses to let her go. She unleashes incredible brutality far beyond what a person should be capable of, her body wracked by inexplicable and unc...

The Ten Thousand Doors of January by Alix E.Harrow

4/5 Stars In a sprawling mansion filled with peculiar treasures, January Scaller is a curiosity herself. As the ward of the wealthy Mr. Locke, she feels little different from the artefacts that decorate the halls: carefully maintained, largely ignored, and utterly out of place. Then she finds a strange book. A book that carries the scent of other worlds, and tells a tale of secret doors, of love, adventure and danger. Each page turn reveals impossible truths about the world and January discovers a story increasingly entwined with her own. I have to be honest here, I read this one a few weeks ago now and if you asked me what the plot was I would have no idea. I've read over the synopsis and I still haven't got a clue. However, what I do remember is that the writing was phenomenal and the characters were amazing and well written and it felt like I was with them the entire time I was reading it (even if I don't know what they were doing).

Chain of Gold by Cassandra Clare

4/5 Stars Cordelia Carstairs is a Shadowhunter, a warrior trained since childhood to battle demons. When her father is accused of a terrible crime, she and her brother travel to London to prevent the family's ruin. Cordelia's mother wants to marry her off, but Cordelia is determined to be a hero rather than a bride. Soon Cordelia encounters childhood friends James and Lucie Herondale and is drawn into their world of glittering ballrooms, secret assignations, and supernatural salons, where vampires and warlocks mingle with mermaids and magicians. She must hide her secret love for James, who is sworn to marry someone else. This has been on my TBR for years now and I finally got around to it last November. I'm ashamed that I didn't get to it sooner as I loved it a lot and it is up there as one of my favourite Shadowhunter books if the rest of the series goes the same way the whole series can become one of my favourites. I loved Cordelia and James and their romance which i...

My May TBR

It's that time of the month again, my monthly list of books that I will ignore for other books. 1) The Secret History by Donna Tartt Under the influence of their charismatic classics professor, a group of clever, eccentric misfits at an elite New England college discover a way of thinking and living that is a world away from the humdrum existence of their contemporaries. But when they go beyond the boundaries of normal morality they slip gradually from obsession to corruption and betrayal, and at last—inexorably—into evil.   2) All That's Left in the World by Erik J.Brown When Andrew stumbles upon Jamie’s house, he’s injured, starved, and has nothing left to lose. A deadly pathogen has killed off most of the world’s population, including everyone both boys have ever loved. And if this new world has taught them anything, it’s to be scared of what other desperate people will do . . . so why does it seem so easy for them to trust each other? 3) Johnathon Strange and Mr Norr...

Delilah Green Doesn't Care by Ashley Herring Blake

4/5 Stars Delilah Green swore she would never go back to Bright Falls—nothing is there for her but memories of a lonely childhood where she was little more than a burden to her cold and distant stepfamily. Her life is in New York, with her photography career finally gaining steam and her bed never empty. Sure, it’s a different woman every night, but that’s just fine with her. When Delilah’s estranged stepsister, Astrid, pressures her into photographing her wedding with a guilt trip and a five-figure check, Delilah finds herself back in the godforsaken town that she used to call home. She plans to breeze in and out, but then she sees Claire Sutherland, one of Astrid’s stuck-up besties, and decides that maybe there’s some fun (and a little retribution) to be had in Bright Falls, after all. I loved this book so much, the small-town romance, the friendships, (the tattoos), the smut level, and Claire and Delilah's relationship growth. It was perfect and the way it was written helped ma...
