Six Crimson Cranes by Elizabeth lim

 4/5 Stars

Shiori’anma, the only princess of Kiata, has a secret. Forbidden magic runs through her veins. Normally she conceals it well, but on the morning of her betrothal ceremony, Shiori loses control. At first, her mistake seems like a stroke of luck, forestalling the wedding she never wanted, but it also catches the attention of Raikama, her stepmother. A sorceress in her own right, Raikama banishes the young princess, turning her brothers into cranes, and warning Shiori that she must speak of it to no one: for with every word that escapes her lips, one of her brothers will die.

This was a wonderfully vibrant fantasy full of magic and dragons, and who doesn't love dragons? Shiori was a brilliant main character who was relatable and amazingly written as with every word you can see the love she has for her brothers and her home without having it be told to you. The magic system was fun and interesting (although the bowl on her head did confuse me and slightly pulled me out of the story as it times it did feel weird). I did wish that dragons played a larger part of the story though.

I can't wait for the second book where I'm sure that dragons will play a bigger part of the story if the ending was anything to go by.
